Supplies:
Yarn – Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick (Super Bulky 6). The colors shown are Succulent, Oatmeal, Barley and Black.
Order online: (Lion Brand) (Amazon USA) (Amazon Canada) (Michaels) (Love Crafts)
Needles – US 13/9mm or whichever size needed to obtain gauge. Size US 13/9mm circular needles, 16” long and US 13/9mm double pointed needles for the decrease, if desired.
Darning needle, stitch marker, pompom maker, measuring tape and scissors. I use the Clover brand pompom makers – size 3 3/8” (blue).
Gauge:
4” x 4” = 9 stitches and 12 rows in stocking stitch (same as pattern). I recommend using US 13 needles, but if you are a loose knitter you may need to drop down to US 11 or go up to US 15 for tighter knitters.
Be sure to check your gauge to ensure the hat will fit your little one properly.

Adding the face:
Using the duplicate stitch, add the face design to your hat, starting at the bottom and working your way up. Start with the Oatmeal color, then Barley. I like to start the face on the 2nd or 3rd row of the knit all rows, depending on which size I am doing. You will add the nose and eyes (if you choose this style) using a French knot. There are lots of quick video tutorials on YouTube if this is new to you.
For the black eyes, there are two options:
- Duplicate stitches like the rest of the face. If you choose this style simply complete the face as shown using the duplicate stitch.
- Complete the eyes using a French knot. If you do this style, first fill in these two stitches with the face color when completing your duplicate stitches. This will hide any of the hat color that shows through in the eye sections. After, add a French knot for each eye.
Adding the nose and mouth:
Complete a French knot in between the two middle stitches.
Add the mouth by following the steps in the photos. Add the right side of the mouth in the same way as you did the left side.
