Supplies:
Yarn – Lion Brand Thick & Quick yarn (Super Bulky 6).
Order online: (Lion Brand) (Amazon USA) (Amazon Canada) (Michaels) (Love Crafts)
Needles – US 13/9mm or whichever size needed to obtain gauge. Size US 13/9mm circular needles, 16” long and US 13/9mm double pointed needles for the decrease, if desired.
Darning needle, stitch marker, pompom maker, measuring tape and scissors. I use the Clover brand pompom makers – I use size 2.5″ green for the double pompoms. It also looks great using the larger pompom maker for a more accentuated style.
Gauge:
4” x 4” = 9 stitches and 12 rows in stocking stitch (same as pattern). I recommend using US 13 needles, but if you are a loose knitter you may need to drop down to US 11 or go up to US 15 for tighter knitters.
Be sure to check your gauge to ensure the hat will fit your little one properly.

Making & Attaching the pompoms:
Secure the tail at the top where you completed the hat before attaching the pompoms. To ensure your two pompoms are symmetrical and the same size, wrap the yarn around the pompom maker the same number of times for each pompom. I wrap it around enough times that it is snug when closing the pompom maker after wrapping. When tying off your pompom, make sure the ends of that piece of yarn are long enough to attach to the hat. Once made and tied off, trim the pompom using sharp scissors.
When attaching the pompoms, you want the two end pieces to weave into the hat from top to bottom, rather than side to side. This helps the pompom to stay in place and doesn’t move around as much when it is being worn. I like to keep 3 bars between the two gaps where I weave in the pompom ends. I start mine one or two bars below the center of the hat, depending on which size hat I am making (1 bar for sizes Newborn to 6-12 Months, two bars for the larger sizes).
Tie the two ends very tightly on the inside several times to ensure it does not come undone. Next insert the end into your darning needle and poke it back through the pompom and pull through. Trim the end so that it is even with the rest of the pompom. Repeat for the second end. When attaching the second pompom, make sure they are even before doing the final ties and make adjustments if needed.
