After browsing our local Marshall’s this past Christmas season, I came across a cute and colorful Christmas pom pom tree decoration. The crafter in me immediately thought “I can make that!” and I wrote myself a mental note to order some felt pom poms and a styrofoam cone as soon as I got home. Although I didn’t get around to ordering the supplies until after Christmas, I made it as soon as they arrived at my door step. My son happened to be learning sorting in his kindergarten class at the time and he had a great time organizing the felt balls for me. Although I mostly blog about knitting, crochet and upcycled sweaters, I couldn’t help but share this fun and easy project.Â
Supplies:Â
~ Styrofoam cone. They come in a variety of sizes. This one is 11.9″ high. These trees would look really cute with multiple ones in different sizes grouped together!
~ Felt pom poms. I used size 2cm/0.79″. For the 11.9″ cone, I needed 199 pompoms. Yes, I did just count them to get an exact number 😉 I ordered the brightest pack I could find. Classic red, green and white colors or all pastel colors would also turn out lovely.
~ Glue gun.Â
Beginning at the base of the cone, glue the pom poms one, one at a time. Make sure the bottom row of poms are level with the table when you set it down so it sits flat.
Space them evenly as you work around, trying to fill in the gaps between the poms of the row below as you work your way up the cone.
Add a couple of poms to the top to cover the tip of the cone. Let the glue dry and you are all set to decorate for Christmas!
