Notes:
~ This blanket is shown in the security blanket size (17″ by 17″). The main part of the blanket is 13″ by 13″. The border is 2″ on each side. It can easily be modified by adding stitches to your foundation chain. Each 9 stitches measures 5″ across. If you would like to increase the width simply increase your chain by the number of stitches needed to obtain the correct measurement. For example, if you would like to make a blanket in the crib size (36” wide), and the original pattern measures 17” across, you will be increasing by 19”. Since you will add 9 stitches for each extra 5”, this will come to approximately 36 extra stitches (9×4=36). Add an extra 36 chains to your foundation chain, for a total of 61.
~ This pattern uses the Intarsia crochet technique for changing colors. If you are unfamiliar with this, there are some wonderful tutorials on Youtube to show you. It is quite simple to learn.
~ Each square in the chart represents one SC on your blanket.
~ You will read the chart going back and forth for each row. The side that the row # is on in the chart is the side you will begin that particular row. Your sheep design will begin on the 4th row (going right to left) and will begin on the right side of your work.
Directions:
Final Measurements: 13” x 13” plus 2″ border in contrast color.
CH 25 in MC
Row 1: SC into 2nd CH from hook. SC in each CH across to the end. CH 1. Turn (24 stitches)
Row 2: SC in each SC across. CH 1. Turn. (24 stitches)
Repeat Row 2 while following the graph until you reach the top.
You will begin the sheep design on the 4th row; starting on the right side.
Once you have completed the sheep, continue until you reach 13″ (approximately 27 rows).
Border:
Starting just after the corner stitch on the side of the blanket, SC into each gap along the side (made from the CH1 at the end of each row of the blanket) and SC in between each of these gaps. When working the top and bottom edges, SC in each stitch.
When you come to the corners, SC 3 times into the corner stitch. Continue.
Once you have come back to the 1st stitch of the border, SLST to join.
CH 3.
SC into your chain in the 2nd stitch from the hook towards the blanket and once more (2 SC total). SL ST two times into the border stitches. Turn your work. Turn it in the direction as if you were flipping a page in a book. If your yarn is at the front of your work, you turned it in the wrong direction.
SC BLO 2 times into the stitches from the last row. It will appear as if there are 3 stitches. The 1st one is your SL ST you just completed. Do not work into this stitch. See photo below.
CH 1. Turn work.
SC BLO 2 times. The first stitch is easy to miss and you need to turn your work towards you to see it. Do not miss this stitch.
SL ST two times along the border stitches. Turn.
Continue to work the same pattern – SC BLO 2 times, CH1. Turn. SC BLO 2 times. SL ST 2 times. Turn. Repeat.
When you come to the corner, follow the same pattern but SL ST only once (instead of 2 times) as you work along the three stitches in the corner stitch. Once you have completed the corner, go back to the regular pattern (SL ST 2 times). Do this for each corner.
Once you have made your way around the whole blanket and are back to the 1st row, SL ST into the 1st row to join. Cut the yarn and stitch the 1st and last row together using a darning needle.
Note – The border directions are the same regardless of the blanket size. The border measures 2″ across. If you would like to make it wider simply increase the number in your chain. Also, increase the number of SC and SC BLO stitches by the same amount.
Weave in the ends and you are finished!
