Supplies:
Yarn – Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick (Super Bulky 6). Color shown is Succulent.
Order online: (Lion Brand) (Amazon USA) (Amazon Canada) (Michaels) (Love Crafts)
Needles – Size 11/8mm needles or whichever size needed to obtain gauge. I knit mine on circular needles (going back and forth only. It is not knit in the round) so there’s lots of room for the bonnet on the needles when working the pattern.
Darning needle, stitch marker, measuring tape and scissors.
Gauge:
4” x 4” = 9.5 stitches and 15 rows in stocking stitch (same as pattern). I recommend using US 11 needles, but if you are a loose knitter you may need to drop down, go up for tighter knitters.
Be sure to check your gauge to ensure the hat will fit your little one properly.

K = Knit
P = Purl

Finished bonnet measures 4.75”-5” top to bottom; 5” front to back (see photos below)
Directions:
Newborn:
Cast on 24 stitches.
Row 1: Knit all.
Row 2: Knit all.
Row 3: Purl all.
Row 4: Knit all.
Rows 5-13: Repeat rows 3 & 4, ending in a K all row.
Row 14: Purl all.
Your hat should measure 3.5” tall and 10”wide at this point. If it is shorter, do two more rows (one row Knit all, one row Purl all).
Row 15: *Knit 3, knit 2 together*, repeat from * to last 4 stitches, Knit 4 (20 stitches).
Row 16: Purl all.
Row 17: Knit 3, *Knit 2 together, Knit 2* repeat from * to last stitch, Knit 1 (16 stitches).
Row 18: *Purl 1, Purl 2 together* repeat from * to last stitch, purl 1 (11 stitches).
Cut yarn, leaving a long enough tail to stitch up the back seam of the hat. Draw the end through the remaining stitches.
Turn bonnet inside out. Using a darning needle, pull the tail tight and stitch the tail through the inside of the hat several times to secure it. Using the same tail, stitch up the two sides of the bonnet from front to back until there is only 4” left. Leave the rest open and weave in the tail.
Cut 6 pieces of yarn 32” long. The two ties will be made using 3 pieces each.
Take 3 pieces and weave them through a gap in the very end corner of the bonnet. Make ends even with one another. Divide the strands into 3 sections and braid them. When you get close to the end stop and tie the end very securely so the braid does not come undone.
Repeat on the other side.
