Supplies:
Yarn – Lion Brand Thick & Quick yarn (Super Bulky 6). Colors – Fisherman, Black and Pumpkin.
Order online: (Lion Brand) (Amazon USA) (Amazon Canada) (Michaels) (Love Crafts)
Needles – US 13/9mm or whichever size needed to obtain gauge. Size US 13/9mm circular needles, 16” long and US 13/9mm double pointed needles for the decrease, if desired.
Darning needle, stitch marker, pompom maker, measuring tape and scissors. I use the Clover brand pompom makers – size 3 3/8” (blue).
Gauge:
4” x 4” = 9 stitches and 12 rows in stocking stitch (same as pattern). I recommend using US 13 needles, but if you are a loose knitter you may need to drop down to US 11 or go up to US 15 for tighter knitters.
Be sure to check your gauge to ensure the hat will fit your little one properly.

Adding the face:
Using the duplicate stitch, add the nose to your hat, starting at the bottom and working your way up. Start on the 2nd Knit all row. The eyes and mouth will be added after using a different stitch.
Next, add the eyes and mouth. The photos below show how to add an eye to our bear hat – the directions are the same for adding the eyes and mouth to our snowman hat. Follow the steps shown in the photos. You will work 4 stitches for each eye/mouth piece. Work one stitch top to bottom, one side to side, and then one going from corner to corner, and then to the other corner to corner. If you are happy with the way it looks, tie and weave in the ends. You can continue adding more stitches if you want the eyes to be bigger.

HI,
You have the BEST hat patterns!!!! I have one question though. I am making the snowman Pom Pom hat as a gift for a 2 1./2 year old. Should I go with the 1-3 or the 4-10 year old size? In clothes you always have to buy larger sizes than the ages, not sure if hats are the same way. A little stumped because a 1 year old’s head seems so much smaller than a 3 year and the same with a 4 year old vs. 10 year old. Love, love, love this hat..just want to make sure I make the correct size for the age. Thank you

Hi Mary, I am glad you found my pattern! The size difference between the 1-3 year and 4-12 year isn’t TOO much. The chunky yarn give some stretch to the hat and if you follow the gauge correctly, is pretty true to size. I would go with 1-3 year and then next Christmas jump up to the next size 🙂 Thanks and happy knitting!

I made the snow man hat…..im not sure I think I maybe a tight knitter. Should I go up a size in needles? I made 1-3 and 4-10 and neither seems true to size. Please help

Hi, Thanks for trying my pattern. Did you check your gauge before starting? It sounds like you knit tighter than the recommended gauge so going up a needle size should help. Check your gauge and go from there 🙂
