Supplies:
Marshmallow Mugs – Purchase here (USA & UK) and here (Canada).
Yarn – Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick (Super Bulky 6). The colors in the photos are Oatmeal and Grey Marble.
Order online: (Lion Brand) (Amazon USA) (Amazon Canada) (Michaels) (Love Crafts)
Needles – US 11/8mm double pointed needles or whichever size needed to obtain gauge.
Darning needle, measuring tape and scissors.
Gauge:
4” x 4” = 9.5 stitches and 12 rows in stocking stitch (same as pattern). I recommend using US 11 needles, but if you are a loose knitter you may need to drop down to US 10.5 or go up to US 13 for tighter knitters.
Be sure to check your gauge to ensure the hat will fit your little one properly.
Abbreviations:
K = Knit
P = Purl
K2tog = Knit two together
Slst = Slip stitch
Size:
Final measurements – 3.75” across at the widest point and 4” high (not including pompom). The mugs used in the photos are 2.25” across at the widest point and 2.75” tall. The marshmallow mugs vary slightly in size depending on who you buy them from, but the hats have a nice stretch to them and will fit all of them.
Directions:
Cast on 18 stitches. Divide the stitches onto three double pointed needles (6 stitches on each needle).
Join.
Begin by working *K1 P1; repeat from * to the end of the round – for 3 rounds.
K all for 8 rounds.
Decrease: *K1, K2together; repeat from * to end. (12 stitches left).
K all for 1 round.
Cut yarn and weave through the remaining stitches. Insert the tail into the hat through the middle opening and pull to close up the top. Secure the tail tightly on the inside and weave in the end. Make pompom using a pompom maker and attach to the top of the hat.
Ears:
Cast on 9 stitches. Leave at least a 6 inch tail to attach the ear onto the hat.
Rows 1-3 – K all. Turn.
Row 4 – Slst, K1, K2tog, K1, K2tog, Slst. Turn. (7 stitches)
Row 5 – K2tog, K3, K2tog. Turn. (5 stitches)
Row 6 – K2tog, K1, K2tog. Turn. (3 stitches)
Row 7 – K2tog, K1. Turn. (2 stitches)
Row 8 – K2tog. Turn. (1 stitch)
Cut yarn, leaving at least 6 inches to attach to the hat. Pull the yarn through the last stitch.
Using a darning needle, weave the 1st tail (attached at the corner) along the bottom edge of the ear, passing the 2nd tail and continuing to the other corner. Pull the tail to shape the ear into a half circle.
Attach the ear to the edge of the hat. Weave the tail in and out all along the base of the ear and hat to secure it properly. Make sure to tack the corners of the ear to keep it in place and give it a nice shape.
Repeat for the second ear, making sure they are placed evenly on the hat.
Tip:
To get the hat to sit nicely on your mug, slide the hat all the way down the mug and then gently push it back up.
